"Mawusi" is a one woman operated lifestyle brand entirely designed and solely created by hand by Jane Odartey at her home studio in Queens, NYC. She lives with her "dearest mother," for whom the brand is named. Jane is also a student who is currently working on her MA in English Literature at Brooklyn College. Jane sources her materials, designs and makes them and then manages the shooting and modeling. In her own words, "I do it all, and happily, too."
Here are a few words about the beginning of her creative journey: "I taught myself to crochet, perched high up in my favorite tree, when I was about nine years old and growing up in Ghana. Quite recently, I enthusiastically also taught myself to knit. At college I majored in English literature with a concentration in poetry, and double minored in photography and education. Though I've no formal background in fashion design, I've always needed to create, just as I've always entertained a great passion for style -- with emphasis on personal interpretations."
Mawusi is inspired by Jane's Ghanaian heritage and love of abstract art. She delights in creating quality hand crafted accessories, jewelry, and clothing that are playfully eccentric. She designs and creates for the stylish consumer who values that which is timeless -- sustainable, effortlessly multifunctional.
The Mawusi line is available, online at www.mawusi.us and at selected trade and craft fairs. To find out more about Jane's schedule, visit her online.
