It's spring, we know, but don't put away those needles! Think of sweet (and fun) ways to take them along for the ride! While many of us would prefer eating one of these, some of us get equal delight in making them -- and what a fun way to use up the stash! But... for those of us who like to knit and crochet, regardless of the time of year - and there are many of us, please remember: It's Mad Tosh May at Knitty City. That means that all Madelinetosh yarns are 10% off all month. Don't be kicking yourself come this fall, stock up now.
Don't Forget Xenobia Bailey will be at the store tonight Thursday, May 21, for a presentation on her newest commission for the MTA and the City of New York. Check out this video of her mosaic being assembled at the 34th St. Station.
New @ Knitty City
Incredible New Yarn from France!
As far as we know, Knitty City is the only shop in NYC to carry this incredible bulky yarn. We've got it out on the shelf right now. One skein knits up a cowl, lickety split! (Think one hour!) Two would make a luxurious scarf. Since the knitting goes so fast, you can make one, and stockpile it for the fall/hoiday season... or just grab a skein or two for future projects!
A New Sock Yarn is in the Store
Much anticipated and designed by talented Norwegian designers Arne & Carlos, this 4-ply yarn, from Regia, produces a traditional Norwegian influenced effect in six extraordinary color combinations and allows you to knit fair isle patterns from one ball of yarn. If socks aren't your thing at the moment, just imagine what a cute teddy bear or cuddly animal toy this would create. In case, you're so inspired, here's a free Peter Rabbit pattern from Joyful Toys. You can find many more free toy patterns on Ravelry.
Upcoming in June
You know how Pearl is always meeting the most talented (and interesting) people? Well, she's done it again and we benefit from it. On Thursday, June 4, from 6-8 PM, please help us welcome Jane Odartey, owner of Mawusi, an Etsy shop in which she sells her hand-made wares. Inspired by her Ghanian culture and a love of all things made by hand, this successful young student will be sharing her story and showing us her line. Please join us!
More in June
Join us on June 1st for our second Knitter's Night Out at City Bakery (3 West 18th St). There's an expanded buffett, free raffles, and a "Strut Your Stuff" show 'n tell, so bring your favorite project! Cost: $30; Date: June 1; Time: 7-8:30 PM. Reserve your seat online or drop by the shop to sign up. Reservations are required.
World Wide Knitting in Public Day is Saturday, June 13th. We'll be meeting in Bryant Park, as usual. Last year we had quite the turn out and we expect the same - or more - this year. This year, there will be music and a chance to share your talents. If you have any "spare stash" you wish to contribute to our free knitting lesson efforts (see below), feel free to bring. Don't forget to reserve your table if you wish to have your group sit together. Ask at the store for details.
Plus... Knitty City will, once again, be conducting free knitting lessons in Bryant Park. This year we start on Tuesday, June 16, from 1:30-3:30. and every following Tuesday, until August 25. This year we will be knitting scarves that will be donated at the end of the season. As usual, needles and yarn will be provided and returned at the end of the lesson. Even if you are an experienced knitter, we welcome you to bring your project and join us. It's great fun, and you may be inspired to share your knowledge with someone new to the satisfying world of knitting -- and Knitty City!
Memorial Day Holiday
Knitty City will be closed on Monday, May 25, in Honor of Memorial Day
Check out our calendar for the latest update on our classes and groups. We also have a book club which meets, as a rule, on the second Thursday of every month. (You don't even have to knit and it's FREE). You'll see it marked on our calendar, along with the book selection for that month. Please come find us on Facebook, Ravelry, Pinterest, too! We look forward to seeing you soon - one way or another.
