Any New Yorker worth the name knows that Spring is one of the most magical times in our city. We are blessed with an assortment of flowering trees and spaces that do our city proud. Many a knitter also knows that spring is a time when thoughts turn to spring and summer projects. Lightweight shawls and sweaters, new baby togs and an assortment of accessories can be made from the cotton and linen yarns that grace our shelves. Since we are always getting new materials we thought a few words and pictures might provide some ideas. Here goes:
Linen - is a favorite pure warm weather fiber. Crisp to knit, it washes up into a soft and perfect draped material. It's perfect for shawls, scarves, and loose cardigans. We carry the Louet brand in both sport and lace weights. Both come in a sophisticated range of beautiful colors. Lots of patterns can be found on both the Louet and Ravelry sites. Note: The lace weight version of this yarn (on cones) is a favorite among weavers.
Cotton - Cotton is a year-round favorite for many knitters. It's ideal for baby gifts, blankets and throws. It is perfect for those who react to wool and, as a "breath-able" material, cotton can't be beat. We're fortunate to offer many options in the cotton section, located up-front in the store: Fine gauge to worsted and beyond. Outstanding examples are: Tahki's Cotton Classic ("lite" and regular) and Blue Sky Alpacas "Skinny" and Worsted cottons.
In addition to linen and cotton, many interesting blends provide just the right feel and weight for spring time (and summer) knitting. Bamboo (viscose) a natural plant based fiber, is another stalwart - especially when blended with cotton or light weight wool. Included among thebrands we carry at Knitty City are: Lang's Riva, Rowan's "Summertime" and Soft Yak DK, Blue Sky Alpaca's "Skinny Cotton" and Worsted Weight Cotton, Berroco's "Weekend", Cascade's "Ultra Pima" Cotton, Sirdar's " Baby Bamboo", Classic Elite's "Sprout" and "Seedling" and Misti Alpaca's "Cotton Silk" - and that's only a partial list. Do stop in soon - and check out our all weather knitting section.
